Celtic and Anderlecht could be thrown a Champions League lifeline with the very real threat that Paris Saint Germain could be expelled from the Champions League.

According to the Madrid based newspaper AS the French side have been ordered to sell eight players this season in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

In the past UEFA have been viewed as being soft on FFP but according to AS the action has been brought on by complaints from Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munich.

Those three clubs represent the elite of European football while PSG are relative newcomers having spent their way to the top table thanks to the backing of Qatar.

After being contacted by UEFA late in the summer transfer window the agents of Angel Di María, Javier Pastore, Blaise Matuidi, Lucas Moura, Julian Draxler, Hatem Ben Arfa, Serge Aurier and Thiago Silva were put on the transfer market. Aurier and Matuidi were transferred for 45 million euros.

It remains to be seen what happens during the January transfer window but with the major club from Spain, Germany and Italy on the case UEFA won’t be able to fudge the issue.

As things stand PSG could be meeting Juventus or Real Madrid in the knock out phase of the competition but tomorrow night they play Bayern in a Group B clash.

If PSG are expelled from the Champions League it would mean that Celtic and Anderlecht could be competing for second place rather than third and a Europa League place.

No club has ever been expelled during the course of the Champions League but with three major clubs raising a complaint UEFA may be forced into drastic action after the French club went on a £400m summer spending spree aimed entirely at winning the Champions League.
