There was so much expectation but Patrick Roberts lived up to it all and more.

As each week passed by during the longest summer it seemed that the ability of the Manchester City kid was growing out of control.

There had been regular bursts of brilliance during his 18 month long spell at Celtic but it was only in April and May that he became an essential part of Brendan Rodgers’ side.

During a six week spell all the tricks, defence splitting passes and finishing ability came together as Celtic clinched the treble with the Rodgers side writing their way into the history books.

Roberts was in devastating form last night and although it was only Hamilton there were touches to his game that ordinary players couldn’t think of never mind execute.

When he left the pitch in the 67th minute he was given a great ovation but there was a little concern at the final whistle when he reappeared and seemed to be limping.

With Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths missing last night’s win due to injury the last thing that Brendan Rodgers needed was another injury worry.

Fortunately the news from Roberts was positive, he told BT Sport: “It was just fatigue, I haven’t played in a number of weeks, it was just good to get out there and play my football.

Asked if he’d be fit for Tuesday he replied: “Yeah, always fit.”
