Brendan Rodgers has diplomatically dismissed the ‘challenge’ from Ibrox.

A large proportion of the Scottish population years for a ‘return to the Old Firm’ rivalry and comfort blanket that forced Dave Murray to rob Her Majesty to keep the Ibrox club in contention for honours.

That flaws policy made the Rangers club toxic with liquidation in 2012 coming a year after Craig Whyte gambled £1 on saving the institution.

Five trophy-less years as a new club has been hard to deal with as the Ibrox club struggle for relevance other than providing training facilities to Celtic’s European opponents.

Last season Brendan Rodgers wiped the floor with the new club, starting and ending the season with 5-1 wins that emphasised the gap between the Glasgow clubs.

The myth that a competitive ‘Rangers’ is essential for the well being of Scottish football crossed the Irish Sea last night with a charity event in Belfast putting Rodgers in the spotlight during a Question and Answer session.

According to the Daily Mail Rodgers was asked by the host: “’Is it better for Celtic and for Scottish football to have Rangers back as a rival?”

The Celtic boss replied: “If you’re in a race, you never look back, you always look forward. The only football club I ever worry about is Celtic.”

Last season Celtic finished 39 points ahead of Sevco and beat the Ibrox club in the semi-final of both cup competitions.
