Sick Bruno Alves missed out on another cap for Portugal with a dose of the runs.

The Portuguese defender reported for international duty for the first time as a Sevco star but missed out on last night’s win over the Faroe Isles.

Alves has played in five matches so far for his new club but wasn’t at his best when he reported for international duty.

Portugal manager Fernando Santos told The Sun: “Bruno actually arrived with systems of gastroenteritis when he got here and warned us about it.

In the middle of the morning team talk, he appeared to have intestinal problems and had to rapidly depart.

He was unable to stay in the theatre and was distressed. He has a fever and is resting in his room on his own

We decided not to take him to the game as a precaution because these things can be complicated and he could be contagious. He’s resting now and we will monitor him.”

Alves is one of just two Sevco stars on international duty giving Pedro Caixinha the opportunity to build on the success of the win over Ross County.

After being told by various pundits and former players that he needed three successive wins to be in charge against Celtic on September 23 the Sevco players came up with a 3-1 win for their under fire boss.

Portugal face Hungary on Sunday with Alves expected to be fit for Saturday’s SPFL clash at home to Dundee who are managed by former Sky Pundit Neil McCann.
