The incredible rise of Anthony Ralston

Two years ago he was between League Two fixtures against Berwick Rangers and Stirling Albion.

Tonight Anthony Ralston will make his Champions League debut against Paris Saint Germain and their £400m strike force.

Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani wouldn’t have been in Ralston’s thoughts as he attempted to make his mark on Queens Park with Hampden providing him with the platform to develop his attacking game.

Tonight it will be his defensive game that comes under scrutiny but with the backing of Brendan Rodgers the 18-year-old will walk out onto the park feeling ten foot tall.

With only one natural central defender available the Irishman will bring Mikael Lustig in to partner Jozo Simunovic in the middle.

A year ago Rodgers could then bring in Cristian Gamboa at right-back but at the end of last season the hoops boss decided that Ralston had the ability to develop into a top class full back.

At Hamilton on Friday night Ralston watched from the bench knowing that he would be starting tonight.

With over a week to prepare he has a good idea what to expect from the richest club on the planet.

As the clock ticks down towards kick-off time a word or two with Kieran Tierney should settle any nerves and underline the opportunity opening up for the full-back who was playing in the bottom tier of Scottish football two seasons ago.
