Alex McLeish has labelled Brendan Rodgers as ‘the poor man’s Jose Mourinho’.

The currently unemployed former football manager was a guest on Alan Brazil’s Show on TalkSPORT this morning when he made the claim.

During his five years as manager of Rangers (IL) collected an additional £1.7m in ‘EBT’ payments which the Supreme Court has ruled was a secondary contract liable to income tax and national insurance.

McLeish was also able to recruit players with that ‘tax-free’ incentive allowing him access to players that the club wouldn’t normally be able to afford in the words of Dave Murray.

After discussing tomorrow’s match between Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, two clubs that binned him as manager, McLeish was asked about the Glasgow derby and Rodgers’ factually correct comment that Sevco have spent more on transfers that Celtic during the summer transfer window.

I have my doubts over whether they (Sevco) can compete with Celtic at this moment in time,” he stated. “Brendan’s playing a wee bit of mind games saying Rangers are going for the title because of the money they spend. A little bit of a poor man’s Jose Mourinho saying it.”

McLeish left Ibrox in 2005 after finishing third in the SPL, finishing behind Celtic and Hearts.
