Jamie McCart has joined St Mirren on a 93 day loan.

The defender spent the second half of last season on loan at Inverness Caley Thistle and made his Celtic first team debut a year ago in the League Cup against Motherwell.

Despite a number of injuries to central defenders this season McCart hasn’t featured in Brendan Rodgers’ plans and jumped at the chance to join the Championship side.

He told the St Mirren website: “I’m excited to be here and get the opportunity for some more first team football. Hopefully I can come in and prove myself in the team and progress as a player while I’m here.”

Saint Mirren were locked in a relegation battle for most of last season after a disastrous start that cost Alex Rae his job.

Jack Ross took over and managed to keep the club up, drawing praise from Rodgers for their performance in the Scottish Cup.

With Harry Davis and Gary MacKenzie out injured McCart is expected to make his debut in Sunday’s home match against Queen of the South which will be televised live by BBC Alba.

Fellow Celts Joe Thomson (Livingston) and Sam Wardop (Dumbarton) are already out on loan to Championship clubs.
