Rab Douglas was mistaken for the match referee when he turned up at Starks Park for Arbroath today.

The 45-year-old recently answered an SOS from Dick Campbell and has been on the bench for the last few weeks.

Despite winning 19 Scotland caps and playing in the 2003 UEFA Cup Final his easily recognised face didn’t ring any bells when he arrived at Starks Park to face Raith Rovers.

Douglas was a £1m signing for Martin O’Neill in his first season at Celtic and managed to hold off the challenges from Jonathan Gould, Magnus Hedman and David Marshall to remain first choice for the majority of his hoops career.

The 2005 Scottish Cup Final against Dundee United was his last appearance as a Celtic player before signing for Craig Levein at Leicester City.

He returned to Scotland for a second stint with Dundee before falling out with John Brown and moving on to Forfar Athletic.
