Kundai Benyu has pledged his international allegiance to Zimbabwe.

The Celtic midfielder was born and brought up in London but qualifies to play for Zimbabwe through his parents.

Benyu joined Celtic in the summer from Ipswich Town for a token development fee and made a big impression on Brendan Rodgers who opted to retain the 19-year-old.

Zimbabwe are currently exiled from international football but are planning ahead for a return to action in March when they play Conga.

Kundai has now definitely committed his future to us,” The Sun reports Zimbabwe boss Wellington Mpandare saying.

He didn’t feature in our last African Cup of Nations qualifiers because of tactical reasons but he has made it clear he wants to play for us and the Ministry of Sport and Recreation are currently arranging the paperwork for him to play for us.”

Zimbabwe’s next game is not scheduled to March next year when they play Congo.

Benyu’s last Celtic appearance was on 19 August when he started in the 2-0 win at Kilmarnock.

On Saturday he was in the Celtic side that lost 6-0 to Swansea in the Premier League International Cup.

In March 2015 FIFA expelled Zimbabwe from the 2018 World Cup qualifiers after the non-payment of a long standing fine.
