Barcelona open up prospect of UEFA reform

|

Josep Maria Bartomeu has admitted that Barcelona have considered playing outside of La Liga.

Sunday’s actions brought the collision between sport and politics into focus with the Nou Camp empty as Las Palmas visited while the city was being attacked by police forces drafted in from Madrid.

After Sunday’s match and a board meeting Eurosport reported Bartomeu saying: “In the case of independence, the club and the members would have to decide in which league we would play.

“We are going through difficult and complicated moments and with respect to what could happen in the future we will take it on with calm and wisdom.”

Any disruption to Barcelona playing in Spanish domestic football would have far reaching consequences and could force UEFA to react.

A fully integrated European league would be difficult to arrange at short notice but an expanded ‘Champions League’ with special entry qualifications for certain clubs could provide Barcelona with a fixture list to keep their squad intact and satisfy sponsors.

Barcelona would have no problem finding friendly fixtures around the globe but would need some sort of league system that supplies them with between 20 and 30 games per season.

Celtic would be keeping a keen eye on any changes with the Scottish champions stating on a number of occasions how they are open to changes in the footballing landscape.
