Kris Boyd has questioned whether Jozo Simunovic has the bottle for the big occasion.

In over two years at Celtic the defender has managed just 60 appearances with a recurring hamstring injury forcing him out of the Champions League double header against Bayern Munich.

Simunovic was signed from Dinamo Zagreb to replace Virgil van Dijk but has still to really get his Celtic career underway.

Brendan Rodgers was unusually candid about the defender’s absence against Bayern but Boyd has gone an extra mile to question the players mindset.

He’s fine when it’s Dundee or Hibs or whoever, when he’s not going to be under huge pressure,” the former Sevco strike ace said in The Sun.

I just wonder if he’s reluctant to put himself in a situation where he’s in danger of being really tested.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like he’ll be pretending to be hurt. I’m not saying that but to me it’s as if he worries that he’ll be embarrassed by a Bayern Munich if he’s ten per cent short.”

Boyd’s outspoken comments seem mostly to be directed at Celtic as he attempts to carve out a career in the media.

With his current Kilmarnock deal expiring at the end of this season following in the footsteps of Steven Thompson seems more likely than a move into coaching.

During his first stint at Ibrox Boyd collected ‘EBT’ payments worth £215,000 which is one subject he has never discussed with the media.
