Radio Scotland presenter John Beattie gave an incredible insight into life as a Rangers fan during an interview with Brendan Rodgers.

The former rugby internationalist hosts the lunchtime show and had the Celtic manager on as a guest to discuss his new book in which all profits will go to charity.

Rodgers has a remarkable story to tell of his journey from Carnlough to Glasgow via various English outposts and a spectacularly successful stint with Swansea.

There was no silver-spoon to help him along with everything so far in his career earned through hard work and commitment.

Beattie made a different journey to Scotland and recalled one incident from his time as a Rangers fan during his interview with Rodgers which seemed more like a confession.

I was born in Borneo and given a Rangers top as my first birthday present,” he explained. “It was on a teddy bear called George after George Young and I came to Scotland when I was about 11 imagining that we all lived in peace and harmony, I didn’t realise that there were protestants and Catholics and everyone.

I remember singing horrible anti-catholic songs and not knowing what they meant. I’ve also said on air Brendan, that I was at a Rangers game where a drunk Rangers supporter turned to me and said that tonight I’m going to stab a Catholic.

I remember thinking this is not part of the world that I want to live in.

As a guy that came from Northern Ireland and the troubles what do you say to sets of fans that take it too far, who appear to be, they certainly don’t appear to believe in God if that is the way they act, what do you say to them?”

Rodgers neatly side stepped the question, he didn’t come up with an equivalent experience and moved the conversation on.

The Celtic boss will be back in Ireland tomorrow night enjoying a Question and Answer session with Eamon Holmes with the proceeds from the night going to Irish charities.
