Neil Lennon was more surprised by Pedro Caixinha’s appointment than his sacking.

In March the fifth best coach in Qatar was introduced as the new messiah to cure all of the problems created by Mark Warburton.

Ignoring the underlying problems of the club is a dangerous business with no aspect functioning as they effectively chase their tail trying to stop Celtic.

Over five years with a regular support of 40,000 a strong club could have been created but as Celtic close in on their tenth title Sevco are as far from the hoops as they were when they set out in 2012.

Caixinha was the original left field appointment, a mixture of sound bites and the strictly unorthodox with a pedigree that wouldn’t entice Motherwell or Kilmarnock into offering an interview.

The Rangers public and the board will have expected better results and I understand that to a certain extent,” Lennon told the Daily Record.

“It’s a tough environment, the Old Firm, and maybe you have to question the appointment in the first place.

“Not many people had heard of him and to bring him into that environment, not really knowing what he was going into, it’s very, very difficult. I have seen it before with other managers.

“It’s an unforgiving environment and the expectation is you have to win and do it in a certain style.

A committee consisting of Stewart Robertson, Andrew Dickson and Graeme Park recruited Caixinha with Dave King keeping a safe distance from the decision.
