McGregor’s insight

Callum McGregor believes that the Brendan Rodgers mentality is helping Celtic get through their punishing fixture schedule.

Tonight the hoops take on Aberdeen at Pittodrie in a top of the table clash with Kilmarnock and Bayern Munich to be faced over the next seven days.

Some of the scheduling may seem a little questionable but the price of success is a crowded fixture list with the hoops squad so far standing up to the tests on three different fronts.

Since the manager came in he has been unbelievable in getting the boys focussed and really into the mindset that the next game is the only one that matters,” McGregor explained. “You can see that in our performances, we’ve not had any lazy days or bad performances. Even if we don’t play well we still get the results.

We just have to look on the next match, it’s the only way. We have a lot of good players which is a strength, if you sit out a game you can be in for the next one with fresh legs. We have a big talented squad and that allows us to keep at a high level.”

Looking back at the Hampden win over Hibs he added: “There were times on Saturday that we looked tired but that’s when you see the mental side of the game and the boys pulled through. We could have ended up with a few more goals, in the end it looked like Hibs had had the midweek game.

We kicked on through the tiredness, it’s great character from the boys, time after time we come up with the results.”

McGregor has been one of the biggest success stories and had already made an impact on the current management team before they arrived in Glasgow.

With Neil Lennon still in charge McGregor spent the 2013/14 season on loan at Notts County with one of his early matches a League Cup tie against Liverpool.

I had a good game in that match at Anfield,” he recalled. I went in for a 50-50 with Stevie G and I can remember him burning a hole in the back of my head after that. He wasn’t too happy but it was a great occasion and I spoke to Brendan and Chris (Davies) about that match when they came in and they remembered which helped.”
