Brendan Rodgers will solve his defensive problems in January.

Today at Hampden the Celtic boss goes into a semi-final without two of his three centre-backs.

Erik Sviatchenko and Jozo Simunovic faced Sevco at Hampden a year ago but will be stuck in the stands for today’s Betfred Cup semi-final against Hibs.

Defensive problems have dogged Celtic all season with Rodgers ready to solve that issue once the transfer window reopens.

It’s definitely an area I need to look at now, centre-half is a position where you need stability,” the Celtic boss told The Sun about his side’s problem position. “It’s been unfortunate for us we haven’t had that.

It hasn’t just been one player who’s been affected, it’s been two and sometimes three at a time who have been out. It’s unfortunate, but we have to make do, and we’ll see what January brings.”

With a place almost guaranteed in the Europa League after Christmas, Rodgers will be in a strong negotiating position when the transfer window opens up.

Rivaldo Coetzee of Ajax Cape Town was a target in August but it’s likely that a more experienced player will be sought to partner Dedryck Boyata.

Jozo Simunovic recently signed a new contract but unless he can put together a run of 20 top team matches it seems unlikely that he’ll be considered as anything other than back up.
