John Brown is heading up Sevco’s UK scouting department.
Director of Football Mark Allen has been at the club for four months and has decided that the former defender is the man to identify the type of player suited to play for Sevco.
Brown was chief scout under Ally McCoist with his last batch of signings in 2011 bringing Lee Wallace, Juan Ortiz, Matt McKay, Marvin Celik, Alejandro Vedoya and Dorin Goian to Ibrox.
Since then Brown has had stints in management with Clyde and Dundee and was appointed as a club ambassador by Dave King.
Explaining the appointment Allen told the club website: “When you go back and look at some of those characteristics I mentioned in terms of the player profile, John is well-known to have had that history with Rangers Football Club and will know what a Rangers player looks like. He will be able to identify those sorts of characteristics.
“He has a track record in scouting previously and he was an easy choice for me and one I wanted to make almost immediately.
“John will head up the domestic side of things and look at Scotland and the rest of the UK. However, the great thing about this department is it is inter-dependent.
“John was an easy choice for me in that respect. He knows what it is like to play for this football club and he knows the types of players who will succeed at this football club in terms of characteristics and he is also able to ascertain and know whether a player can cope with the intensity.”
What funds Allen, Brown and the new manager will have to work with is anyone’s guess after Pedro Caixinha’s summer spending.
After four years of losses propped up by a share issue and soft loans from directors Sevco have still to publish their audited accounts to June 2017.
Those figures are likely to reveal further significant losses with this season heading the same way after the summer spending failed to produce Europa League football while the Betfred Cup semi-final defeat from Motherwell denied the club £1m.
