Davie Hay has accused BBC Scotland of trying to smear Celtic with the tax scandals that killed off city rivals Rangers.

On Monday night the state broadcaster ran with a story about the Swiss tax affairs of Irish businessman.

Celtic innuendo was all over the story with Dermot Desmond ‘doorstepped’ on his way to a Celtic match with Mark Daly reporting from outside Celtic Park.

There was no news angle for this story other than to associate the Scottish champions with a tax scandal with all national newspapers taking the lead and running with the story.

Commenting on the matter in the Evening Times Hay, a Celtic ambassador, said: “I would have to say that issue for me was that there appeared to be a smear between linking Celtic to the issue and also offering a vague suggestion that it might have been interpreted as similar to what went on at Ibrox.

I think that is unfair and also hugely wide of the mark. There is no question that Desmond is a hugely influential figure at Celtic – but equally there has been absolutely no suggestion that the club are guilty of any wrongdoing.

I think that is what stuck in the craw of some supporters – the attempt to smear the club with the allegations.

Whatever the tax affairs of Desmond, it is unrelated to the way that Celtic as a club have been run.”

Despite leading with the story across their platforms on Monday at 6pm BBC Scotland haven’t provided any follow up to the story.

While the state broadcaster is happy to sling mud at Celtic they have refused to touch Sevco’s audited accounts which were published last Friday.

Other than a standard agency reaction BBC Scotland haven’t commented on a £6.7m loss on turnover of £29.2m or the refusal of the three bears to continue to subsidise the loss making company.

According to the accounts Dave King’s NOAL group will provide £4m to the company this month.
