Boyd still firing away

Kris Boyd has played down Ryan Christie’s Scotland debut and suggested that the next international manager calls in John Fleck and Ross ‘Young’ McCrorie!

The chunky Kilmarnock striker was scathing in his criticism of the squad when he appeared on Radio Scotland on Monday night and didn’t see anything in the performance against Holland to change his mind.

Christie came in for particular criticism from Boyd but had an encouraging international debut according to most folk who watched the game.

Writing in The Sun Boyd claimed: “Other folk are saying a dazzling debut is proof that Ryan Christie will go on to win 50 caps. I hope he does, but that’s a lot easier said than done.

It’s taken Craig Gordon a decade to reach that landmark — and he’s outstanding.

I’m not sure of the bookies’ odds on Christie winning 50 caps, but even if we were allowed to bet I’m not sure I’d stake too much on it.”

Turning to who should be getting a game for Scotland he added: “I’d look at some English-based players, such as Barrie McKay, Barry Douglas, John Fleck and Liam Lindsay.

I’d also look at the cream of the next generation, even if they skip the Under-21s to gain experience in the main squad. So many people are talking about Ross McCrorie at Rangers.”

As well as being highly critical of Christie Boyd also claimed that Andrew Shinnie and Kenny McLean were included in the squad in a bid to sell tickets for Pittodrie.

While trying to carve out a career as an outspoken pundit the Kilmarnock ace is also rubbing up a lot of opposing players and managers the wrong way.

As he spouts off about other Boyd would do well to remember the shortcomings in his own career.

Despite being the all time record goal scorer during the 15 years of the SPL the former Rangers (IL) strike ace never scored once in the Champions League and has scored once against Celtic in 17 years.
