Derek Ferguson wants to see Graeme Souness and Walter Smith form a Sevco management dream-team.
The Radio Scotland pundit fears that Celtic are motoring towards a tenth successive title and that the veteran duo can stop his nightmare coming true.
Smith has been out of the front line since handing the brown brogues of dignity on to Ally McCoist while it’s over a decade since Souness was last involved in the dug-out.
Celtic are already nine points clear of manager-less Sevco with that lead likely to stretch well into double figures once the Ibrox side complete their December fixture list which includes trips to Aberdeen, Hibs and Celtic.
The tribute act seem to be no nearer to identifying their next manager than when they axed Pedro Caixinha with Ferguson coming up with a novel plan to take over from caretaker Graham Murty.
“People will question what I’m about to say here and ask if I’m on drugs or something,” he admitted to the Daily Record.
“However, my preference for the next Rangers boss would be to reunite Graeme and Walter and bring them back to Ibrox.
“I know it is unlikely to happen but I would love to see Souey and Smith return for one last hurrah. Celtic clinching 10 in a row is a real prospect and Rangers need to think outside the box.
“The club have done all their thinking so far inside the box and produced nothing. Souness has said he would never go back but if he is such a Rangers man as he purports to be, would that challenge not entice you? That would get the juices flowing surely.
“Stopping Celtic from making it 10 is the biggest challenge Rangers have faced in their history.
“They need strong leadership and that’s why Souness and Smith fit the bill.
“So why not bring them back with a young coach like Barry Ferguson, Alex Rae or Kevin Thomson working underneath them learning the ropes.”
Expanding on his reasoning Fergie added: “I really have been racking my brains and that is the best I can come up with. I have worked under the two of them and it is exactly what Rangers need.
“The supporters just need something to cling to and real hope for the future. This is arguably the most important appointment in the history of the club.
“Imagine you are the Rangers man who prevents 10 in a row. You will be a legend forever.
“That’s why it is going to take something revolutionary or dramatic like appointing Souness and Smith because if they don’t then there is only going to be one outcome and that is Celtic winning 10.
“It is quite simple really – Rangers are trying to stop Celtic’s runaway train.”
