The 30 year poll- vote for Celtic’s best keeper

|

Thirty years ago Celtic were into their stride in their Centenary season with momentum building towards a memorable domestic double.

It was one of the most enjoyable seasons since Lisbon as Billy McNeill returned to the helm and rebuilt the team despite the economic monster being constructed across the city.

That squad went down in the history books but sadly it was to be another decade before the title was reclaimed.

Since the 87/88 season there has been all sorts of dramas around the club, incredible highs, painful lows and the future of the club, or company, in doubt before a new stadium emerged.

It’s not quite an advent calendar but over the next couple of weeks Video Celts will be looking back at the players to have pulled on the hoops with distinction over that period and will ask readers for their votes.

Pat Bonner and Allen McKnight shared the duties in 87/88 but over the last decade the Celtic support has been spoiled by three great keepers. Great in different ways and pivotal to recent successes.

ARTHUR BORUC

What an impact this guy had- on the park as well.

Initially signed on loan from Legia Warsaw he was brought in to replace David Marshall after Celtic had lost nine goals in Gordon Strachan’s first two matches.

The young and lean Boruc was outstanding as Celtic skated to the title but it was in the Champions League that he excelled.

Boruc was genuinely worth a couple of points in any Champions League group, it would take something pretty special to beat him.

The lifestyle seemed to effect the Holy Goalie, as the waistline increased so did the howlers but the majority of the memories are favourable.

FRASER FORSTER

It took big gloves to replace Boruc but Neil Lennon did his home work and brought in the giant Geordie on loan.

He certainly looked the part but didn’t seem to have the natural flair and instinct that we’d come to expect from Boruc.

Forster came into his own in season 2011/12 with a memorable penalty save at home to Hearts as the hoops powered from 15 points behind to nudge ahead of Rangers (IL) by new year and go on to lift the title.

The following season became one of legend as The Yellow Wall put in an incredible performance away to Barcelona- then surpassed it when Messi came to Celtic Park.

The form took Forster into the England World Cup squad, Celtic retained him for one more season before he hit the bright lights of Southampton.

CRAIG GORDON

There was no fanfare to greet the former Hearts keeper who was looked on as a cut price replacement for Forster.

After two years out of action Gordon looked to be a write off but quickly made his mark behind the defensive pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Jason Denayer.

There has been little let up since his Celtic debut although Dorus de Vries posed a threat early last season.
Interest from Chelsea a year ago earned him a new deal at Celtic and despite some questionable performances, mainly in Europe he is backed to the hilt by Brendan Rodgers.
