Celtic’s incredible 69 match unbeaten run

There was virtually no anger yesterday as Celtic’s unbeaten domestic record came to a halt after 69 matches, the scoreline at Tynecastle was a shock but very quickly supporters looked back with pride on an incredible 19 month run.

It started off under Ronny Deila with a 7-0 win over Motherwell but effectively the entire run has been all about Brendan Rodgers.

In his first domestic match in charge, against Hearts at Tynecastle, the former Liverpool boss introduced Scott Sinclair who bagged the winner and has barely stopped scoring since.

Last season the biggest threat to the run came at Fir Park when Motherwell twice led by two goals but typical of the side Celtic battled back to win the match 4-3.

Along the road there were four trophy wins and seven victories over Aberdeen although as the run stumbled in the end more and more clubs had at least been able to record a draw against the hoops.

The Invincible tag for last season’s efforts will last forever, the unbeaten record almost survived the full calendar year but as the Celtic support adjust to a domestic defeat there are plenty of outstanding memories to savour from a fantastic era in the club’s history.

CELTIC 5-1 SEVCO, 10 SEPTEMBER 2016

For over a year Celtic fans had been hearing about the former city trader, Joey Barton trashed everything related to Celtic but after 90 dramatic minutes it was the beginning of the end for both men.

Led by Moussa Dembele, standing in for the injured Leigh Griffiths, Celtic played the newcomers off the park to power their way to a 5-1 victory that set up the domestic season for both clubs.

Dembele scored a classic hat-trick, one with his head, one with his right foot and one with his left while Scott Sinclair and Stuart Armstrong showed that they knew the way to goal.

It was a glorious sunny day, with a place in the group phase of the Champions League secured the new regime was well under way.

SEVCO 1-5 CELTIC, 29 APRIL 2017

A week earlier Celtic had cruised to a 2-0 win in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup, a backlash was promised for the league champions with Sevco now led by Pedro Caixinha.

An early penalty set the tone, by the time the second half got underway it was a procession towards the away fans in the Broomloan Road end of the ground.

Callum McGregor, Dedryck Boyata and Mikael Lustig were the unlikely scorers after the break as Celtic imposed their authority on the city with the home supporters flooding out long before the end.

To be fair to Sevco four stewards did manage to prevent Leigh Griffiths from tying a scarf round a goal post

CELTIC 2-1 ABERDEEN, 27 MAY 2017

It was a very emotional day at Hampden with all of the efforts over the previous 10 months and a place in history at stake.

Jonny Hayes put a spoke in the works with an early goal but Stuart Armstrong equalised with the sort of goal that he had been scoring all season.

Aberdeen disrupted Celtic’s style while the loss of Kieran Tierney, without punishment, was a tough one to take.

During the second half the pressure towards the Dons goal was constant but it took until the closing moments for Tom Rogic to weave his way through the Aberdeen defence to net and secure an Invincible treble.
