Barry Ferguson will wait until December 30 before declaring Sevco as title challengers.
Four wins in a row have propelled Graham Murty towards legendary status and edged the Ibrox lot ahead of Aberdeen into second place on goal difference.
Celtic are currently five points ahead and can extend that to at least eight if they beat Hearts and Partick Thistle with the visit of Sevco on December 30 offering the prospect of extending the lead into double figures.
Honest mistakes have played a big part in the wins over Ross County and Hibs with Ferguson holding back before rejoining the laughable #goingfor55 campaign.
He told the Daily Record: “The challenge is to extend that unbeaten run from four league matches to eight which would take them up to, and including, the game at Celtic Park on December 30 before the mid-season break.
“Do we have a title race? Graeme Murty has gone only as far as saying the players are on the right road and it’s worth echoing that sentiment.
“There’s no point in saying Rangers are better and stronger than Celtic but at least they’re making more of a fist of it this time around.
“Rangers are finally heading in the right direction and at least they’re travelling to difficult venues again, such as Pittodrie and Easter Road, and winning.
“It’s too early to gauge if they can push Celtic to the closing stages of the campaign but the game at Parkhead in a fortnight will give Rangers an idea of where they are at this stage.”
Under Brendan Rodgers Celtic have won six and drawn once in seven Glasgow derbies against the Ibrox newcomers- a run which includes three wins in nine months at Ibrox.
Tomorrow Sevco host St Johnstone at Ibrox with expectations growing that Murty could solve the managerial problem and be left in charge for the rest of the season.
