With resources tight and players tired how good would it be if Brendan Rodgers had a young £2m midfielder to call in.

Scott Brown’s place in the team is assured but there are two other midfield places up for grabs that no-one has quite claimed despite four players featuring regularly.

At the start of the year Eboue Kouassi was signed from Russian side Krasnodar with the fee varying between £1.5m and £3m, a work permit was secured and the midfielder signed up while the squad trained in Dubai.

A bout of malaria when he arrived in Glasgow didn’t help but the plan to break him in to the squad during the second half of the season and be firing on all cylinders for the Champions League qualifiers never quite worked out.

So far this season Kouassi has only started in two SPFL matches and hasn’t been on the pitch since getting a 20 minute run out in the 7-1 defeat from Paris Saint Germain in November.

He has been on the bench a couple of times but despite injuries to Patrick Roberts and Tom Rogic there has been no sighting of the midfielder from the Ivory Coast.

Having made his mark in the Russian League playing in the SPFL shouldn’t be too much of a culture change- no one would be happier than Rodgers if Kouassi has a big impact on the second half of the season.
