The January departures

In less than two weeks time the transfer window opens up with Celtic appearing well prepared to do business.

The conformation of Marvin Compper as a Celtic player seems to be only a matter of time but almost as importantly Brendan Rodgers will look to move on a number of players.

When he replaced Ronny Deila the Irishman had a big task to trim back on a bloated squad that was especially top heavy in terms of midfielders.

Over three windows he has managed to achieve that but there is still work to be done with even some of Rodgers’ signings being lined up to move out.

Any transfer requires three party agreement but with players out of the picture they are more likely to agree to move on.

During the summer transfer window Emilio Izaguirre, Kris Commons, Efe Ambrose, Logan Bailly and Gary Mackay-Steven were moved on, by the end of the summer window it could be the case that less than a dozen of the players that Rodgers inherited are still at the club.

ERIK SVIATCHENKO

It really has been a spectacular fall from grace during 2017 for the Danis defender.

He seemed an integral part of the Celtic side as 2016 drew to a close but the emergence of Dedryck Boyata and a story suggesting an exit in January seemed to set his hoops career into reverse gear.

Despite returning to full fitness last month Kristoffer Ajer and Nir Bitton have played in front of Erik whose agent seems to have been working hard to prepare for a move.

CRISTIAN GAMBOA

Was signed by Brendan Rodgers in August 2016 but this season has been virtually a write off for the former West Brom defender.

His decision to play in the Gold Cup in June alongside the emergence of Anthony Ralston reduced his prospects but with Ralston injured over the last two months chances have been limited.

With a World Cup place to secure he’ll be looking for first team football which is clearly out of bounds remaining at Celtic.

LIAM HENDERSON

It’s quite sad how his Celtic career is fizzing out after the promise shown breaking through in the final weeks of Neil Lennon’s reign.

With close to ten midfielders in competition it was understandable that he had second thoughts about signing a new contract, and equally understandable that the club put other players ahead of Hendo.

Celtic will be due a development fee whether he sees out his contract or not, a January move makes sense although it’s unlikely that Hibs could afford a permanent deal.

STUART ARMSTRONG

There’s something not quite right about the Dundee United man, after a summer of uncertainty before agreeing a 12 month extension he could well be on his way next month.

Brendan Rodgers is big on commitment, with a number of other midfield options and Armstrong failing to get close to last season’s form a parting wouldn’t really be a big surprise.

Last season’s Armstrong was a main stay of the Celtic side, sadly this season he is expendible with Rodgers utterly ruthless when it comes to commitment.
