The SFA look like missing in appointing Michael O’Neill as Scotland manager.

Three months after sacking Gordon Strachan as manager of the national team Stewart Regan has still to come up with a replacement.

An approach was made to the Irish Football Association to speak to their manager but there seems to be little urgency over a move for the former Hibs and Dundee United winger.

Over the last few days O’Neill has been linked with the vacancy at Stoke City with various reports distancing the Irishman from the Scotland job.

The Sun reported: “Privately, the ex-Shamrock Rovers chief, who played most of his career in Scotland, is less than amused with how the SFA have handled their pursuit of his services, having made their intentions public and then delaying discussions after formally being given permission to speak to the former Hibs and Dundee United star.”

Although Scotland don’t have a competitive match until September successive tournament failures would suggest that a new boss needs lots of time to turn things round.

Malky Mackay took charge of the November friendly against Holland but on the day of that match Regan appeared on TalkSPORT and ruled out the former Cardiff boss as Strachan’s successor.
