Nir Bitton is almost certainly out of action for the remainder of the season.

The versatile Israeli has been troubled by a knee injury and is expected to undergo surgery in the next couple of days.

Bitton was in contention to play in central defence tonight against Zenit St Petersburg but Brendan Rodgers will now have to choose between Jack Hendry and Jozo Simunovic to partner Kris Ajer.

The Celtic boss told The Sun: “Nir Bitton will probably be out for the season which is a blow for us.

He has an issue with his knee and probably needs an operation and that is probably him for the rest of the season.

It is a shame for Nir because he has been an important member of our squad. We are hoping some of the others will be back sooner rather than later.”

Bitton joins a lengthy injury list that includes Craig Gordon, Anthony Ralston, Dedryck Boyata, Marvin Compper, Patrick Roberts, Stuart Armstrong, Mikey Johnston and Jonny Hayes.

This season the 26-year-old has mainly been used as a central defender with that area of the team devastated by injury.

Although he hasn’t been a regular pick he has been able to come in for domestic matches allowing other players to take a breather.

Tom Rogic is expected to be on the bench tonight after two months out through injury.
