Smith’s elephant in the room

With the campaign to get Walter Smith appointed as the next Scotland manager Rangers Tax Case has reappeared with a very uncomfortable question.

While Smith enjoyed the benefits of Dave Murray’s EBT recruitment campaign the former Rangers (IL) boss has managed to largely escape scrutiny from the list of the great and good, plus Alex Rae, Neil McCann, Barry Ferguson, Steven Thompson and Billy Dodds.

There is no doubt that Smith was the man that Murray trusted most, despite all that has happened to the Ibrox club since the 69-year-old walked away he has never once criticised the Edinburgh based businessman.

Murray enjoyed £6.5m of EBT payments, it would be incredible if Smith wasn’t weighed in for his unstinting support and silence on important matters.

With their strong relationship Smith wouldn’t need a side letter and was almost certainly looked after as he brought in player after player with an EBT assisted salary, the Manuel ‘I know nothing’ excuse would be one hell of a stretch.

Rangers Tax Case has viewed more documentation that most and has previously tweeted about Smith’s EBT payment- while he was manager of Everton.

During his time at Goodison Park Smith agreed to sell Michael Ball to his old pal at Ibrox. A £6.5m transfer fee was agreed while Arthur Numan was the first choice left-back at Ibrox!

As the Walter bandwagon increases there is one pressing question that the International Committee need to ask the former Rangers (IL) boss- and it’s not why the SFA weren’t compensated for him breaking his contract to quit Scotland to help Murray out in January 2007 after two years in charge of the national side.
