What next for Anthony Stokes?

Quietly, without any fanfare Anthony Stokes slipped out of Hibs yesterday by mutual consent.

The same terminology that was used when he left Blackburn Rovers in the summer.

There was a little hurt in Neil Lennon’s voice as he confirmed the departure of the striker that he had trusted six months earlier with Hibs pushing the boat out to put together an acceptable deal.

With seven goals in 15 Premiership appearances Stokes had stuck to his bargain on the pitch but off it he has found himself in bother once again.

At 29 the Dubliner really should be at the peak of his game after a decade where he can literally score for fun in Scottish football. Falkirk, Hibs and Celtic fans have enjoyed the skills of the player that made an Arsenal top team appearance as a teenager.

In 2016 Stokes became a legend at Easter Road by scoring a double in their first Scottish Cup win in over 100 years.

Less than two years later his agent has to convince a manager that Brendan Rodgers, Tony Mowbray and Neil Lennon were all wrong in their assessment of the former Ireland internationalist.
