Celtic will face Ireland on May 20 in Scott Brown’s testimonial match.

According to a report in The Sun an announcement will be made this week after talks with Liverpool to play in the match broke down.

A visit from Martin O’Neill’s side would be hugely popular with the Irish national side previously providing the opposition in the testimonials for Jackie McNamara and Pat Bonner.

Brown is completing his eleventh season at Celtic following his £4m transfer from Hibs and has been an inspirational skipper under four different managers.

Finding a date for any friendly is a difficult task with the start of next season ruled out with Celtic looking to get through four qualifying rounds for the Champions League- tying up eight midweek dates.

Ireland play France in a friendly on Monday 28 May followed by a home match against the USA on June 2 meaning that the game with Celtic will bridge the gap between the end of the domestic season and those fixtures.
