Ferguson can’t quite decide on Murty

Barry Ferguson has urged the Sevco board to make a decision on the future of Graeme Murty- but isn’t sure what decision he wants them to make.

The Ibrox caretaker takes his side to Motherwell tomorrow hoping to avoid a third successive Premiership defeat with his paper thin reputation on the line.

After the euphoria of high scoring wins against Ayr United and Falkirk reality kicked in as Celtic and Kilmarnock took it to seven home defeats for Ibrox season ticket holders to endure.

With another clash with Celtic just over two weeks away Murty knows that his fate will be decided at Hampden.

While he has managed to raise morale since replacing Pedro Caixinha results haven’t improved much with Hibs and Aberdeen still in the race for second place.

Explaining his own dilemma Ferguson told the Daily Record: “I believe the Ibrox board are in two minds whether Graeme Murty should be given the job beyond the summer.

Do I think he’ll get the job? No. Would I be happy if he was? I believe he deserves the chance to be a serious candidate.

He’s done just about enough ?to have a shot at it and he now needs the club to back him. That lack of clarity is the last thing this club needs, it doesn’t help Murty, his players or the most important people, the Rangers fans.

There has been a shift over Murty’s future and those in control at Rangers are now unsure. There’s no doubt in my mind that they are having second thoughts.

For the sake of stability, it’s time to make a call and if the board don’t, we’ll be chasing before a ball is kicked next season.

Football’s a weird game, you look at the form Rangers were in leading up to the recent Old Firm game and Murty was being lauded from all quarters.

I also believe that for an hour against Celtic, Rangers were excellent but then comes a defeat and it’s followed by a loss at home to Kilmarnock.

“The mood has changed but what if Murty manages to beat Celtic at Hampden in two week’s time? It will be all aboard the Graeme Murty bandwagon once again.”

Ferguson added: “The only certainty in my mind is the Rangers board need to make a decision one way or another and need to make it now. There are several reasons why it must be done urgently.

From a recruitment point of view, we are coming into April now and a manager’s work for next season starts back on the first day of February, after the January transfer window closes.

Murty will have identified targets he’d like but he’s sitting in a position where he can do little planning as he doesn’t know if he’ll still be in the job beyond the summer. I don’t think anyone can argue that his recruitment in January was excellent.”

With no sign of audited accounts or Dave King’s cheque book Sevco have more immediate issues to deal with other than the future of the former York City star-maker.
