Alastair Johnston is back in the spotlight for his role in Rangers (IL) getting a UEFA licence from the SFA in 2011.

The American based businessman submitted the application to the SFA which somehow failed to pick up on the £2.8m owed to HMRC for illegal payments made to Tore Andre Flo and Ronald de Boer.

Details of that bill, and the fact that is was overdue as far back as November 2010 was confirmed by a number of witnesses at the trial of Craig Whyte last summer.

Unless Sandy Bryson can come up with a highly imaginative interpretation of events there are only two possible explanations at to what happened.

Either Rangers (via chairman Johnston) failed to reveal the overdue tax bill or the SFA were aware of the bill and decided to go ahead knowing that the money from playing in the group phase of the Champions League was essential for the survival of the club.

Last night STV picked up on the fact that Johnston hadn’t been passed fit and proper to be a director of Sevco.

That news has been picked up by the Daily Record and The Sun which brings the issue of the 2011 UEFA licence to a bigger audience.

Having previously denied that any errors had been made over the licence application in September Stewart Regan referred the issue to the Compliance Officer of the SFA.
