Ian Maxwell is ready to apply to become the new chief executive of the SFA.

The Partick Thistle chief stood down from his seat on the Board of the SFA and is preparing to apply for the job vacated by Stewart Regan.

Maxwell’s place on the SFA Board has been taken by Neil Doncaster which leaves the old guard of Alan McRae and Rod Petrie isolated.

The appointment of the next chief executive of the SFA is vital if they are to stand any chance of surviving.

At the heart of the current problems are the way that the SFA prepared for and reacted to the liquidation of Rangers in 2012.

The Compliance Officer has spent more than six months reviewing the paperwork with the evidence overwhelming that Rangers (IL) were given a licence to play in UEFA competition despite having an overdue tax bill.

Former SFA President Campbell Ogilvie was heavily involved in that matter as were Andrew Dickson, Paul Murray, Dave King and Alastair Johnston who have all been welcomed back into Scottish football despite being directors in a club that went into administration.

The first task of a new chief executive will be to expose and clear out those involved which has cost every member club trophies, prize money and European appearances.

Petrie was on the licencing committee that rubber stamped the Rangers case with his club Hibs among those that suffered most.
