Davie Provan believes that Steve Clarke will be laughing at the speculation linking him with a summer switch to Ibrox.

The former Chelsea defender has transformed Kilmarnock since replacing Lee McCulloch as manager with the Ayrshire side comfortably clear of Hearts in the top six.

In the autumn Sevco were turned down by ‘Rangers man’ Derek McInnes for the managerial vacancy with the toxic nature of the job easy to turn down.

The coming week looks like being another traumatic one as Dave King attempts to underwrite an £11m share issue while interim accounts are required to apply to play in UEFA competitions next season.

Clarke has spend over 30 years building his career in England with Provan in no doubt that when he does he leave Killie he’ll be heading south again.

Writing in The Sun Provan stated: “Boyhood Celtic fan Steve Clarke will be chuckling at speculation linking him to Rangers.

After Clarke dented Graeme Murty’s chances of the gig by winning at Ibrox, the Rangers board is being urged to make a move for him.

They could do a lot worse, but Steve would be off his head to take the Gers job.

Clarke’s work at Killie won’t go unrewarded. He’ll be at a bigger club on a better contract before long. But it’ll be back in England where he made his reputation.

Either way, Rangers are being urged to make an A-List appointment to challenge Celtic.

I get that, but in reality they haven’t a chance in hell of getting one.

No harm to Mark Warburton, Pedro Caixinha and Graeme Murty, but they are the Ibrox standard these days.

Guys who are chuffed to get such a high profile job knowing there’s a nice pay-off waiting when they come up short.”

Murty was given the job on a caretaker basis until the end of the season after McInnes walked away from a move to Ibrox.
