Southampton can forget about Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers won’t be on his way to Southampton.

Within two hours of Mauricio Pellegrino getting sacked the Celtic boss was linked with the job by The Sun.

The report claims that Saints vice-chairman of Football Les Reid is a big fan of Rodgers.

The Celtic boss is a big fan of Luis Suarez but the Uruguayan won’t be slipping into the hoops any time soon.

If Rodgers had wanted a struggling Premiership club he could have sat it out a little longer in 2016 and got a job in the ‘greatest league in the world’.

Chances are that he’d probably have been sacked by now with not many of the EPL bosses that started the 2016/17 season still in place.

Meanwhile Rodgers is planning a third successive Champions League qualification campaign working with the players that have qualified in each of the last two seasons.

The report in The Sun mentions the £2.5m salary that the Irishman has at Celtic. After taking the club turnover to £90m last year the manager’s take home pay, including treble and Champions League bonus was close to double that figure.

With a property empire Rodgers won’t be running short of money any time soon. On the footballing side he has a challenge that he fancies and can get his teeth into. He virtually runs Celtic and doesn’t have to justify decisions to a vice-chairman of football.

Earlier this season the Celtic boss spoke out against the six week cycle that EPL managers work under. Not even the comfort of a compensation cheque would tempt him into that environment.

There are obvious reasons for Fraser Forster, Virgil van Dijk and Victor Wanyama leaving Celtic for Southampton, there are far more reasons why Rodgers won’t be heading south to join the relegation battle at St Mary’s.
