Gordon Strachan has shone some light on the tug-of-war that brought Scott Brown to Celtic in 2007.

The midfielder was one of a number of highly promising young players coming through at Hibs that were being sold for big money.

Brown was forever banded alongside Kevin Thomson who joined Rangers (IL) in January 2007 for a £2m fee with the Fifer expected to join his pal along the M8 at Ibrox.

Rangers (IL) fans chanted about signing Brown when they visited Easter Road but quietly, against the odds, Celtic were working on a deal and stumped up £4.4m to sign Brown.

With his transfer to Celtic confirmed the midfielder signed off with Hibs by scoring against Celtic in a 2-1 victory with his goal celebrated by both sets of fans!

Reflecting on the negotiations Strachan told the fans at Brown’s testimonial dinner: “I said the magic words to Peter Lawwell ‘Rangers want to sign him’, we didn’t know back then but Govan was a tax haven.”
