The shame of Bearsden and Scottish rugby

There is a well known saying of ‘When in Rome’ but the middle class, upward young professionals from Bearsden Rugby Club know better, as their father’s told them.

There is a great middle class pretence to bundle all the bigotry stuff at the door of the scruffy working class types from Partick, Drumchapel or god forbid Larkhall or Kilwinning.

As anyone with knowledge of the cultural anti-catholic attitudes throughout Scotland will know there is no class divide.

The Crawford, Farquar and Cameron hate filled bigots of Bearsden and Milngavie are usually just a bit smarter and more discreet than their cousins Billy, Bobby and Gordy who are a few Council Tax levels removed.

Sometimes though Farquar and Hamish aren’t quite as clever as they seem to think they are, in this case twitter user Dayner.

After capturing some rugger high jinks on his phone Dayner (Whisky Queen 89) decided to share on twitter.

BBC Scotland rugby man John Beattie discovered the video in which one of the bigots reveals that ‘F*** the Pope’ is the most memorable phrase in one of their catholic hating anthems.

This week Dayner and his chums will be back home at their respectable jobs, in their middle class housing estate getting on with their usual life’s, keeping a lid on the hatred that inspires them. They may even work alongside some people that they hate.

Since the video was released there hasn’t been a comment from Bearsden Rugby Club, perhaps the lads over in Rome were just exporting one of their favourite in-house party pieces.

Rather than apologise and disown their fan in Rome Bearsden Rugby Club has taken down it’s facebook page, perhaps if you know one of their sponsors they can use their influence and enforce some Diversity Training?
