Walter Smith has delivered an incredible put down on Ally McCoist football manager.

The former Sevco chairman has been back at Ibrox this week trying to drum up interest in ticket sales for a ‘charity’ match where all of the proceeds go to the club’s own youth programme.

Smith quit Scotland in 2007 to replace Paul le Guen at Ibrox and took McCoist along as his trusted number two.

When it was time for Smith to step down he nominated McCoist as his successor with Dave Murray putting together a water-tight contract that Craig Whyte couldn’t afford to bin.

As manager, McCoist got Rangers (IL) knocked out of the Champions League and Europa League with administration and liquidation inevitable from that point onwards.

Smith gave lukewarn encouragement to the prospect of Graeme Murty getting the job on a permanent basis but as he discussed the options he gave away a tell-tale comment about his only managerial recommendation.

If he (Murty) is going to get the job he could start planning and start going ahead with things,” Smith told The Sun.

But I don’t know what’s going to happen and it’s not my forte. My forte was picking teams, not managers.”

McCoist TUPE’d his Rangers contract over to Sevco and bought up one million shares at one pence each before fans paid 70p per share in December 2012.

As Sevco boss the former Question of Sport skipper couldn’t even win the Petrofac Cup running up embarrassing defeats to Raith Rovers, Forfar, Queen of the South and Alloa before spending a year on gardening leave.
