Leigh Griffiths has opened talks to extend his Celtic contract.

The former Hibs striker signed a deal under Ronny Deila to keep him at Celtic until 2021 but is keen to stay even longer.

Griffiths has had his share of issues on and off the pitch since joining Celtic from Wolves in January 2014 but has shown his worth time and time again with 97 goals.

My representatives are working behind the scenes to try and get me a new deal,” the striker told The Sun.

It is early stages now, but hopefully we can get it done sooner rather than later.

I have another two and a half years left but why would you want to go anywhere else? You’re playing at a top club with a top manager in front of 50,000 or 60,000 every other week.

There’s no reason to go anywhere. You have Champions League football every season.

It’s hard to get there now, but when you do get there, those are memorable nights.

Hopefully if we can come to an agreement, I’ll not be far off Broony.

I think he has deserved his testimonial. The type of guy he is, he is deserving of everything he gets.”

Brendan Rodgers is a big fan of Griffiths but has been frustrated by the regular muscle injuries that the striker has suffered.

After a two month lay off the striker returned as a substitute against Ross County at the weekend and is confident that the work of a specialist has provided a long term solution.

With Odsonne Edouard on loan until the end of the season and constant speculation about Moussa Dembele on his way out getting Griffiths onto a new deal makes sense on a number of fronts.
