Derek Johnstone has admitted that he will be very surprised if Graeme Murty is in charge at Ibrox next season.

It seems to be open season on the former Reading favourite who is being denied the respect that a Real Rangers Man would expect in similar circumstances.

Ally McCoist, Barry Ferguson and Walter Smith have all doubted Murty’s credentials to be manager when the normal convention is unswerving loyalty to the man in brown brogues.

Writing in the Evening Times Johnstone explained: “I would be very surprised if Graeme is the manager next season. I am not saying he definitely won’t be, but I would be surprised.

I think the fans like Graeme. I like Graeme as a man, but is he the manager that Rangers need right now? I think the odds are stacked against him.

Dave King praised Graeme for the job that he has done this week and spoke about delivering ‘immediate success’ next season.

I don’t think you can read too much into whether Graeme will still be the manager on the back of that, though. He didn’t say he was getting the job or he isn’t.”

King’s letter to season ticket holders on Monday promising a manager capable of bringing instant success sent out the message that Murty was on borrowed time.

A succession of former players have been dragged out this week with no one standing up for Murts and saying that he was the man for the job.

Having failed to recruit Derek McInnes last November the ‘attractiveness’ of the Sevco job has been highlighted with any candidate for the job certain to sound out the Aberdeen boss for his reasons for turning down what was apparently his dream job.
