Ally McCoist has told Dave King to match his bold statements with cold hard cash.

The South African based criminal promised the earth as he campaigned for power but has so far racked up over £20m of debt with Sevco as far away as ever from catching Celtic.

On Monday morning King promised season ticket holders a manager to bring in instant success but that’s not going to come from the current squad consisting of signings from Mark Warburton and Pedro Caixinha held together by loaned players who will return south of the border next month.

McCoist continued to drain the club of his gardening salary even after King marched into the blue room of unsurpassed dignity and wants to see more millions splashed out in the summer to halt Celtic’s march towards an eighth successive title.

Instant success is a realistic prospect if they continue to support the manager financially in terms of attracting new players,” the man who led the club to cup exits from Queen of the South, Forfar and Alloa told The Sun.

It depends also what you mean by instant success. Does that mean winning a trophy or does it mean winning the league?

For me, the next step would be winning a trophy. If that’s to happen then the manager, whoever that may be, must be able to invest in his squad.

Graeme will know what his squad needs and what his team needs to develop. They certainly, absolutely, need strengthening, all over the park.

It would be wrong for me to sit and say specifically those positions but certainly Rangers will need, I would have thought, at least four players if they want to challenge Celtic for the league title next year.

You can win a cup. With a bit of luck anyone can win a cup and that has been proven over the years. I still think longer term Rangers would need certainly three or four players of good quality.”

With £11m needed to underwrite a share issue it’s unlikely that there will be much funds left over in King’s warchest to fund a raid on the transfer market.
