The Scottish Football Supporters Association has welcomed the appointment of Ian Maxwell as chief executive of the SFA.

Improving on Stewart Regan’s relationship with supporters shouldn’t be a difficult task with the former Yorkshire cricket chief dismissive of any contact with fans other than tokenism.

Maxwell has a multitude of issues to tackle with trust in the football authorities at an all time low as a recent SFSA survey illustrated.

The death of Rangers in 2012, the lack of punishments and creation of the Continuity Myth has left fans sceptical that every club is dealt with equally with no action ever taken by the SFA over Rangers (IL) fielding ineligible players in a decade of Scottish Cup ties.

Maxwell will inherit a huge in-box when he moves into Regan’s old office but does have the backing of the SFSA to implement meaningful change.

Simon Barrow, Chair of the Scottish Football Supporters Association, said: “It is extremely important that the Scottish Football Association uses this appointment to change direction from the way fans have previously been treated.

We believe that supporters deserve more recognition in Scottish football – as do players and coaches/managers. Ian has proven to be an excellent advocate for fans having a significant voice at Partick Thistle and we do hope that he will be allowed to build on that experience when he takes over at Hampden Park.

At the end of last year our independent academic research showed that the reputation of the football authorities was exceptionally poor.

We as supporters are more than happy to work with Ian Maxwell and others to improve that situation in the months and years ahead. We now need more fan engagement at every level to make this truly ‘the people’s game’ once more.”

Maxwell takes up his new role on May 21 following the Scottish Cup Final.
