SPFL fixture dilemma

The SPFL and Sky Sports have a little dilemma to work out as they plan the final round of Premiership fixtures.

It is an annual issue with similar problems resurfacing.

Central to it all is the need to avoid the title being clinched in the Glasgow derby.

This year a problem kicks in with the broadcasting deal restricting clubs to just four home matches being televised. Already Celtic home matches against Hearts and Sevco have been shown live.

Celtic will have three home matches after the split, against Aberdeen, Sevco and Kilmarnock with Sky wanting to show live the title clincher, derby clash then presentation day.

With sell out crowds assured for each of their three final fixtures Celtic won’t have any issue with all of their post split matches being on the telly but it will require a deal between Sky and the SPFL.

If that can be agreed Celtic should be at home to Aberdeen on April 21 almost certainly needing a point to win the title followed by an away trip to Hearts or Hibs if they slip up.

According to reports the Glasgow derby was the preferred fixture for April 21 but with Sevco collapsing that date is a likely title clincher or the day that the title is put out of Graeme Murty’s reach.

An announcement on the post split fixtures is expected between Saturday and Monday with April 21 and 28 plus May 5, 9 and 12 the dates for the final fixtures.
