Scott Arfield didn’t take long to get on message.
The former Falkirk starlet signed a four year deal at Sevco yesterday then predicted a stampede of top stars joining him at Ibrox.
News of Arfield’s signing came as a shock to a number of Sevco directors as they attempt to make ends meet from season ticket sales knowing that a £3m plus loan to Close Brothers must be honoured.
The lender of last resort has got security over anything worthwhile at Ibrox with only the most severe austerity programme capable of meeting the terms of that loan.
Paying out transfer fees or adding to a wage bill that already includes Carlos Pena, Lee Wallace, Eduardo Herrera and Bruno Alves seems to be a recipe for disaster but Arfield believes he’ll soon be joined by other big earners at Ibrox.
“Gerrard will definitely attract top players,” he told the Daily Record.
“Rangers already had that appeal because they are a top club but I think it enhances the situation. The stature of him suits a club of this stature.
“It would have been almost quite easy for someone like him to go to a League One or a League Two club, or maybe Championship or bottom half of the Premier League but jumping in here, it just suits everyone and gives everyone a buzz. He was my hero.
“I was fortunate enough to play against him and getting that different aspect of off the field advice now as well as the on the field experience can only enhance you as a player and a person.
“Of course, the stature of people coming to Scotland, it entices you to come back up here.
“With someone of his criteria coming up here, it’s so much more appealing for players to come up to this league.”
It seems that stature has replaced history in the vocabulary of new signings at Ibrox.
Arfield started 15 matches for Burnley in the season just finished, his last first team appearance was in February away to Swansea.
