Carragher’s warning to Gerrard

Jamie Carragher has added a rare voice of caution to the frenzy surrounding Steven Gerrard’s appointment as manager of Sevco.

Most English based pundits seem to think that Scottish football revolves around two clubs in Glasgow who share out the trophies.

With Brendan Rodgers providing an extra dynamic it can be assumed that the magic of Stevie Gee will perform similar wonders at Ibrox.

Carragher has looked under the bonnet at both clubs and realises that his old team-mate has taken on an almost impossible job.

On every front Celtic are miles ahead of Sevco with no aspect of the tribute act outperforming the hoops whether it comes to playing, coaching, sponsorship, retail, hospitality or commercial.

It will take more than Jermaine Defoe and Martin Skrtel to topple Celtic as Carragher admitted to the Daily Record.

“It’s always been difficult for Rangers with the financial implications (being unable to cheat other clubs and Her Majesty through tax scams to recruit better players),” the former Anfield defender warned.

No matter how good Steven is as a manager – and we don’t know yet – he will still need help financially to try and compete with Brendan and Celtic.

Steven has signed a four-year deal. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think people are expecting Rangers to win the league next season, but certainly they need to be more competitive against Celtic.

It’s a brilliant move for Scottish football and it makes things a lot more interesting in terms of the Old Firm now.

Hopefully, from Steven’s point of view, they’ll be able to overhaul them. Brendan has done brilliant up there. It was brilliant him going there in the first place up at Celtic.”

Sevco fans aren’t buying season tickets to be more competitive.

If Gerrard doesn’t stop eight-in-a-row he’ll end up on the scrapheap alongside Mark Warburton, Pedro Caixinha and Graeme Murty.
