After one media conference followed by a quick drive back down the M74 Derek Johnstone is convinced that Steven Gerrard is a top manager.

Johnstone enjoyed the best days of his career under Jock Wallace and sees similarities between the Liverpool youth team coach and his old boss.

Without having met the players there are massive expectations on Gerrard who will start work on June 1 with Europa League qualifiers expected the following month.

Season ticket sales are absolutely crucial to Sevco’s business plan with a flow of feel good stories being published to encourage fans to buy into the latest revolution.

Writing in the Evening Times Johnstone admitted: “Steven Gerrard isn’t the Rangers manger yet, not officially anyway, but I was impressed by the way he spoke about how he wanted his team to play.

He wants to see every one of the players empty the tank in every game, which reminded me of Big Jock (Wallace).

Maybe he will get them to run up the sand dunes at Gullane and, arguably, that’s what some of them need.”

With Dave King tucked up in South Africa Gerrard will have to work with Mark Allen and Stewart Robertson on a daily basis.

No real details seem available about funding this year’s revolution, with a £3m plus charges loan taken from Close Brothers it’s unlikely that Gerrard will be able to match the spending of the Pedro Caixinha revolution.
