The Daily Record has warned Sevco fans that their boardroom has lost it’s only class act with the resignation of Paul Murray.
The Borders based businessman, affectionately known as pot-less from his days as a high-flyer with Deutsch Bank, departed alongside Barry Scott with the club issuing a four line statement thanking both men for their efforts.
Murray masterminded King’s arrival as chairman in March 2015 but with no real wealth to invest had to content himself with a new blazer and a minor boardroom role playing the Real Rangers Man card to reassure supporters.
With Sevco’s arrival in the top flight turning out to be a complete disaster Murray has kept a low profile but with King failing to acknowledge his departure he has further angered the Record.
Murray outside of the tent may be more useful to Ibrox fans than having a seat inside the blue room of unsurpassed dignity.
Looking back at the heady days of March 2015 and regime change at Ibrox the Record reports: “King claimed the victory with a bullish litany of brash statements about how his cash won the day as he walked over the threshold with Murray and Gilligan.
“But the truth is he’d never have pulled it off without all Murray’s honest endeavour.
“King has mastered the art of making too much noise when none is needed then saying nothing at all when his voice is urgently required. Yesterday was most certainly one of those days.
“When Gilligan could no longer accept the way King was running Rangers and chose to walk away, the club released a statement almost four times the size of the one announcing the departures of Murray and Scott.
“King gushed about his contribution, signing off by saying: “John is one of the most passionate Rangers fans I’ve ever known. He brought a great deal to the boardroom table and was never slow to question decisions or courses of action if he thought there were better options. John always put the interests of supporters first.
“On behalf of the entire board of directors and Rangers supporters everywhere, I’d like to thank John for his unflinching support, wisdom and commitment. He is a true Rangers fan.”
There was no signing off comment from King about Murray’s contribution.
As Sevco head towards administration and liquidation the South African based criminal can’t expect much sympathy or support from the Glasgow based publisher that has loyally backed every Ibrox regime down the years.
