Ally McCoist has warned Steven Gerrard that he will need millions to compete with Celtic.

Overnight the message coming out of the Scottish media was that talks to appoint the former Liverpool skipper were progressing with assurances given about his war-chest.

McCoist knows the inner workings of Ibrox better than most with the club deeply in debt as they attempt to stop Celtic winning 10-in-a-row.

A whole new first team squad would be required to present a challenge to Brendan Rodgers but most of the current squad have at least two more years remaining.

He needs to be able to bring in a much better quality of player,” McCoist told TalkSPORT.

It has really split the Rangers supporters but in terms of the Scottish game I think that it will give it incredible exposure. One of England’s best ever players going up to Scotland to start his managerial career.

The exposure that it can give the country and the league can only be good but from Rangers point of view, listen it is a massive gamble. I don’t buy into it at all, the comparisons between Steven Gerrard and Graeme Souness.

There is no comparison. The first thing that Graeme Souness did was go and sign the England captain and goalkeeper. Unless I’m mistake that ain’t going to happen.”

Assuming that Gerrard gets the assurances that he requires from Dave King he has a massive task rebuilding the Sevco squad.

No more than five or six of the current squad are likely to survive but with Carlos Pena, Eduardo Herrera, Andy Halliday, Jason Holt and Micky O’Halloran contracted until 2020 it’s going to require some hefty pay-off’s to move on the players brought in by the last two managers.
