Sam Wardrop has signed a two year contract with Dundee United.

The defender captained Celtic to the 2017 SFA Youth Cup win over Sevco at Hampden and spent last season on loan at Dumbarton.

Wardrop made 27 appearances at Dumbarton before picking up an injury in March but did enough to convince United to take him to Tannadice.

Speaking to the United website Csaba Laszlo said: “Sam is an athletic and energetic defender who likes to get forward and attack the opposition. I am pleased that we have secured his signing.

“We must build a squad capable of winning the Ladbrokes Championship, and he will be an important part of the squad next season.”

United already have a number of former Celtic players in their squad including James Keatings, Paul McMullan and Lewis Toshney.

After two seasons in the second tier of the Scottish game the pressure will be on United to win promotion back to the top flight.

With Ross County and Partick Thistle moving down a division the Championship will be very competitive with clubs like Falkirk, Dunfermline and Inverness Caley Thistle all carrying hopes of winning promotion.
