Outwardly he is Mr Mellow, the most diplomatic manager in the business.

During moments of controversy he is rarely caught out, as others get angry Brendan Rodgers gets even, delivering the right words and actions while others lose the plot.

Without question Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final was ruined by the weak refereeing of Kevin Clancy.

Motherwell players knew that they had licence to do as they please. The favoured tactic was the late challenge, slide in just as the ball is released and hammer your opponent, usually Kieran Tierney.

The young Celt could have had his career ended last February when Ryan Bowman decided to plant his studs on Tierney’s knee after the ball had been cleared. Referee Don Robertson almost apologised as he produced a red card.

Tierney was subjected to similar mistreatment at Hampden. Clancy and his assistant Douglas RED CARD, RED CARD Ross didn’t want to know.

Once Celtic went 2-0 up the players concentrated on avoiding injury. They kept an eye out for the follow through, they passed the ball quicker than they would like too.

With RED CARD Ross rising through the ranks Rodgers faces another season of diplomacy with no sign of anyone inside Hampden being prepared to administer the laws of the game.
