Tore Andre Flo’s Rangers (IL) contract details are leaked

|

On the day that the Daily Record explained that HMRC are looking for payment plans from former Rangers (IL) employees details have leaked of Tore Andre Flo’s side letter.

The striker moved to Ibrox in November 2000 as Dave Murray finally snapped up the expensive striker he had promised Dick Advocaat. Despite not being a regular in the Chelsea side Rangers (IL) paid a reported £12m for the Norwegian.

As well as raising that sort of transfer fee, for a player not eligible to play in Europe, Murray had to fund the wages for a four and a half year deal.

Paying the player the required sum through legal means would have been a stretch too far but thanks to the Discounted Option Scheme Murray felt that Flo could get the net salary he required with Her Majesty taking a hit in terms of Income Tax and National Insurance.

After years of debating the scam with HMRC the old Ibrox club finally admitted to the tax liability with a bill for £1.4m owed on Flo and Ronald de Boer who was paid in a similar way.

With Rangers refusing to pay Her Majesty the bill rose to £2.8m due to interest and penalties and was overdue when the SFA awarded a UEFA licence in 2011. Sheriff Officers were sent to Ibrox in August 2011 with HMRC among the 276 creditors left out of pocket when the old club went into liquidation.
